For most purposes a number is defined as the length of a line, positive going right and negative going left. The combination of a number and a direction defines a vector. However, the sign of a vector is arbitrary; you can choose any convemient direction as a positive, and a negative only means the opposite direction.
A vector is direction and magnitude, which is generally referred to as speed but could differ. One example of a vector might be 10 mph north. The negative of that vector would be -10 mph north, also known as 10 mph south. In short, a negative vector is the same speed in the opposite direction.
