My teacher has .docx files that we, his students, can download. They're meant to be printed because he's strictly paper, but I used one to type on until I could get a paper from him. I did the whole assignment, exited out of google docks, and when I came back it was the blank format again with no work done. I checked document history and it was no help. Can I get my work back or is it gone?
Did an assignment on a .docx and the assignment is gone. Can I get it back somehow?

Unlikely. If it's a google doc, the data is even more ephemeral than if you'd deleted a file on the local system.
Teachable moment. Save often, always backup to resilient storage (google doc should have a file -> download or save as IIRC). Branch to versions if the update's quality is unclear. Every student goes through rewriting from scratch once. For a wise student, only once.
