How do I find out if a gun is illegal, not stolen but illegal to posess?

What type gun are u talking shot gun or .22 or hand gun u realy know u shoudnt have, if u found ( ? ) hand gun do u know its history...........mayb best drop it into amnesty drop as u realy dnt want b arrested 4 history of that gun
