Would ladies prefer a sterling silver necklace, let's say from Tifanny & Co. v.s. a White Gold necklace from a "lesser" brand? Price of both jewelry are the same ~$300.

I would go with the lesser store but still spend the $300. You could get a silver necklace with a cool pendant and maybe a bracelet or ring or earrings too for the Tifanny price. If you go to a small jewelry store (away from the mall) you can find some cool silver designer stuff in that price range.
On the other hand - it depends on what kind of girl. But honestly, if you are going to show off your Tifanny - its not the $300 one.
