(pōmpĕ´ō jērô´lämō bätô´nē), 170887, Italian painter. Batoni studied and worked in Rome, learning much from the work of Corregio and Raphael. His paintings tend toward the neoclassical, a style echoing that of Mengs. Among his notable works are

Mary Magdalen (Louvre). Batoni is noted mainly for his portraits.
