Gros. The exhibition of his large
Joas Saved by Josabeth in 1822 brought him a popularity that continued throughout his life. He devoted himself chiefly to the painting of large historical canvases.
Death of the Duke of Guise (Chantilly) is a notable example. Romantic in subject and in sentiment, the painting of Delaroche is studied and academic in handling. He was also a popular portraitist.
