fl. 167198, English potter, reputed founder of the Chelsea porcelain factory. The registration in 1671 of his patent for the Mistery of transparent earthenware … is the first certain recorded event of his life. He is considered to have laid the foundation of the pottery industry in England and to have set a standard not excelled elsewhere. There are examples of his work at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum.
