Troup, George Michael

1780–1856, governor of Georgia (1823–27), b. McIntosh Bluff, on the Tombigbee River, Ala. (then a part of Georgia). As governor, he was an extreme supporter of states' rights. The final removal of the Creek from Georgia and the cession of their lands to the state was due in great part to his belligerent and uncompromising attitude toward both the Native Americans and the federal government. He was also a U.S. Representative (1807–15) and Senator (1816–18, 1829–33).
