(hĕrtr´thēs gō´mĕth dā ävĕlyänā´thä), 1814–73, Spanish poet, b. Cuba. She went to Spain in 1836. Her passionate and poignant verses reflecting an unhappy love affair won her a high place among Spanish romantic poets. She also wrote problem novels, such as the antislavery El Mulato Sab (1841), and dramas on historical and religious subjects, including Alfonso Munio (1844), Saúl (1849), and Baltasar (1858).
