(gäbrēĕl´ änôtō´), 18531944, French historian and statesman. Twice minister of foreign affairs (189495, 189598), he greatly furthered the Franco-Russian rapprochement. His chief fame is as a historian, notably as the author of
Contemporary France (4 vol., 19038; tr., 4 vol., 19039) and
Histoire de la fondation de la troisième république (4 vol., 192526). He also edited the
Histoire de la nation française (15 vol., 192527).
