Feodor III, his succession was opposed by the supporters of his half brother,
Peter I (Peter the Great). However, Ivan and Peter jointly succeeded under the regency of Ivan's sister
Sophia Alekseyevna. After the overthrow (1689) of Sophia's regency, Ivan was excluded from state affairs and Peter assumed control. Ivan's elder daughter, Catherine, was the grandmother of
