Karmel, Peter

(kär´məl, kärmĕl´), 1922, Australian educator. Karmel was educated at the Univ. of Melbourne and Cambridge Univ. He worked at the Commonwealth Bureau of Census and Statistics (194345) before teaching at the Univ. of Melbourne (194649) and then at the Univ. of Adelaide (195062). In 1961 he was asked to plan a new campus for what is now Flinders Univ. of South Australia; he served as its vice-chancellor from 1966 until 1971. He was later vice-chancellor of the Australian National Univ. (198287) and president of the Academy of Social Science in Australia (198790). His books include
