(pōl äNtôN´ də lägärd´), 1827–91, German Orientalist. Lagarde was one of the most important biblical critics and Middle Eastern philologists of his century. His work included studies in Iranian, Syriac, Greek, Arabic, and Aramaic, but perhaps his best-known contributions were to the criticism of the biblical text.
