Larkana

(lärkä´nə), city (1998 pop. 270,366), S central Pakistan, on the Ghar canal. Famous for the quality of its rice, it is an important grain market and a trading center for silk and cotton goods. Brass and other metalware are manufactured. The city has two colleges affiliated with the Univ. of Sind. Larkana, named for the Larak tribe that inhabited the neighboring area, is the birthplace of former Pakistani prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. Remains of the ancient city of Mohenjo-Daro (see Indus valley civilization) have been uncovered c.15 mi (24 km) S of Larkana.
