18901973, American artist, b. Charlottsville, Va. Macdonald-Wright was among the first Americans to paint in a totally abstract mode. Together with Morgan
Russell, he founded synchromism in 1912. In paintings such as
Oriental Synchromy in Blue-Green (1918; Whitney Mus., New York City), Macdonald-Wright uses color to build an illusion of space and depth.
