(mĭl´ĭj), 17571818, American political leader, b. Savannah, Ga. In the American Revolution he was a prominent figure in the group that seized (1775) the colonial government at Savannah. A lawyer, he was a U.S. Representative (179293, 179599, 18012), governor of Georgia (18026), and a Senator (18069). The Univ. of Georgia campus is situated on land that he donated, and the city of Milledgeville was named in his honor.
