mĕn´tə jərmā´nē-ē hĭstôr´ĭkə), comprehensive critical editions of the sources of medieval German history. The first society created to publish them was founded by Karl vom und zum
Stein in 1819, and the first volume appeared in 1826. G. H. Pertz, general editor until 1874, was succeeded by Georg
Waitz. Many eminent scholars took part in the project, and additions and revisions continued into the 20th cent. The
Monumenta ranks among the great collections of source materials and was instrumental in stimulating research on medieval Germany.
