s), 191090, Swiss political leader. Entering politics in his native town of Sachseln, he served (194146) as its president. He was later a government (cantonal) councilor (194659) before becoming a federal councilor, head of the federal department of justice, and chief of police. A member of the Swiss Conservative party, he served two one-year terms as vice president of the Swiss Confederation (1963, 1968) and two one-year terms as its president (1964, 1969).
