It was the scene of a battle (Feb. 2, 1461) in the Wars of the Roses (see Roses, Wars of the), which ended with a decisive victory for the Yorkist forces under Edward, duke of York, over the Lancastrians. Edward then marched to London, where he proclaimed himself King Edward IV.
