18371915, English lexicographer. In 1879 he assumed the editorship of the
New English Dictionary (the
Oxford English Dictionary), which was his life's work (see
dictionary). Murray was a guiding force in this compilation, a triumph of modern scholarship, and its general plan and much of the work on details are to be credited to him.
