18551918, American historian, b. Canton, Maine. He taught at Worcester Academy (187779) and Brooklyn High School (188389). From 1890 to 1896 he was adjunct professor and, after 1896, professor of history at Columbia. A recognized authority on American colonial history, he wrote
The American Colonies in the Seventeenth Century (3 vol., 19047) and
The American Colonies in the Eighteenth Century (4 vol., 1924), which deal mainly with the origin and development of English-American political institutions.
