1821–88, American archaeologist and journalist, b. Bethlehem, Albany co., N.Y. He is noted for his study of the prehistoric Mound Builders of the Mississippi and Ohio valleys. His works include Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley (1848) and Aboriginal Monuments of the State of New York (1851).
