Xiangtan

(shyäng´tän´) or Siangtan(shyäng´tän´, syäng´–), city (1994 est. pop. 490,100), E central Hunan prov., China, on the Xiang River. Formerly an agricultural distribution center, it is now industrialized. Products include textiles, iron, steel, manganese ore, cement, and machine tools. The name sometimes appears as Hsiang-t'an.
