What is the most important information I should know about tiludronate?

Tiludronate can be damaging to the mouth and stomach. Each dose must be taken with a full glass (6 to 8 ounces) of tap or bottled water to ensure complete swallowing of the medication.

Do not take this medication with mineral water, juice, or any other beverage, since these beverages may decrease the effectiveness of tiludronate.

Take tiludronate at least 2 hours before you eat any food; drink any liquid; or take any medicines, especially, calcium supplements, aspirin, indomethacin (Indocin), vitamins, minerals, or antacids.


What is tiludronate?

Tiludronate alters the cycle of bone formation and breakdown in the body.

Tiludronate is used to treat Paget's disease of bone (osteitis deformans).

Tiludronate may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.


What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking tiludronate?

Do not take tiludronate without first talking to your doctor if you have

  • a problem swallowing, such as a narrowing of the esophagus;
  • esophageal ulcers or an esophageal disease;
  • kidney disease; or
  • stomach ulcers or other stomach problems.

You may not be able to take tiludronate, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listed above.

Tiludronate is in the FDA pregnancy category C. This means that it is not known whether it will be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not take tiludronate without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment.

It is not known whether tiludronate passes into breast milk. Do not take tiludronate without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.


How should I take tiludronate?

Take tiludronate exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of tiludronate, skip that dose and take the next regularly scheduled dose the following day. Missing one dose will not make a difference in long term treatment with tiludronate.


What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention if an overdose is suspected.

Symptoms of a tiludronate overdose are unknown, but the following symptoms might be expected: nausea, heartburn, pain in the abdomen, diarrhea, other stomach-related symptoms, muscle cramps, numbness or tingling, uncontrollable facial grimacing, seizures, irritability, and abnormal behavior.


What should I avoid while taking tiludronate?

Follow you doctor's recommendations about drinking alcohol and smoking. These activities are related to decreased bone density.


What are the possible side effects of tiludronate?

Stop taking tiludronate and seek emergency medical attention or contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following serious side effects:

  • an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives);
  • difficulty or pain when swallowing;
  • pain or burning under the ribs or in the back; or
  • new or worsening heartburn.

Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take tiludronate and talk to your doctor if you experience

  • stomach upset, nausea, or vomiting;
  • diarrhea or flatulence; or
  • a rash.

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.


What other drugs will affect tiludronate?

Do not take any other medicine, including vitamins, at the same time as tiludronate unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Any drug that is taken at the same time as tiludronate can decrease the effects of this medicine.

Before taking tiludronate, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:

  • an antacid;
  • a calcium supplement;
  • any other vitamin or mineral supplement;
  • aspirin; or
  • indomethacin (Indocin, Indocin SR).

The drugs listed above should not be taken within 2 hours before or after a dose of tiludronate. You may require special monitoring during treatment if you are taking any of the medicines listed above.

Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with tiludronate. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines, including vitamins, minerals, and herbal products.
