My great-great grandfather and his brother were soldiers in World War One and when my cousin had to write a journal like this, he helped out. He never usually talked about it but when he did, it all came out and it was beyond horrific. I'm guessing you don't want something like this but if you did, I remember what was in it.
For me, I'd rather choose the child as a subject. The journal could be an adventure of the child as being not yet matured and full grown but exposed to WW1. It is like surviving being orphan due to the war and no idea how to go on. It depends on you how you portray the feelings or emotions of the child (like wrath, hopeless, etc.). You can add to the story that he found a new family but afterwards, they became killed also. Can also add that he jut out to a train or ship to escape the country and go to somewhere. Just suggesting..
