What was the prehistoric dwarf deer/horse that had those weird slits on it's mid snout?

I can't remember what it was called but it's supposed to be the ancestor of either deer or horses or both. If I remember the image correctly it had 3 hoof like toes and was not much bigger than a border collie. It had some strange slits just below its eyes on it's snout. Anyone remember what it is called?
