They don't. NYC is warmer than London at about the same latitude because NYC has warm ocean currents out of the Caribbean, and London has cold ocean currents out of the Arctic regions. But both locations have freezing weather in winter.

New York City has a warmer climate than London. But both areas are always cold during the winter. (FREEZING cold)
