Chromatography is passing a mixture through a filter, not sideways, but lengthwise. In chemistry class you are given strips of blotter paper on which you put spots of test chemicals. One end of the paper is then put into a solvent so the solvent has to travel through the length of the paper, carrying the test chemicals along. Chemicals travel at different rates and you can learn things by comparing them.
Another method is to pass charged particles through a magnetic field, where they are separated according to mass/charge ratio.
