Can I use speakers and attach them to a white noise machine or other sources would that be enough to drown out noisy upstairs neighbors footsteps?

Most white noise machines don't have ports for external audio sources, but if you have a kindle or phone or mp3 player you can attach speakers to that either through its audio port or using Bluetooth to play something. Youtube is full of white noise effects and other kinds of eclectic music and sounds. When I want to drown out the sounds of my annoying roommates I just attach a speaker set to my kindle and blast my ambient black metal or my pagan folk music playlists.
