HIV is the virus you get infected with- human immunodeficiency virus and AIDS is the resulting illness that may eventually break out from the infection with the virus which is called acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Nowadays however, in many parts of the world, HIV has become a chronic condition in which progression to AIDS is increasingly rare due to the regular use of antiretroviral drugs.
