confused if you wait till 8 pm to sleep and the next day u sleep again at 8 pm isnt that 24 hrs you were awake?

Well you have to count the awake time only and that is not between 8pm and 8pm but maybe between 8am (when you wake up from that sleep?) and 8pm the same day, so not 24 hrs. :-)
