Can friends sext in a joking manner without it meaning anything?

So my friend and I were texting and jokingly it turned a bit sexual, I was pretty sure it was all jokes but he seemed pretty into it. At the end of our conversation I asked him if it was all jokes and he said of course but I am a little worried he lied, I'm just wondering if its possible that friends can flirt and sext with it all being just a joke??
