Does the shape of matter affect its temperature?

In my science class we had to make water heaters (we made a container and then put water in). I took a pop can and painted it black so it would absorb heat but then the analysis questions asked what the shape of our heater was. I have to have a scientific reason why i picked a pop can shape but i dont know why....does the shape of the pop can affect its temperature and how?

Your scientific reason is that the pop can has very low mass to volume ratio, so minimum heat is used warming the container. Also it is readily available and easily replaceable.
