Its a slow healing wound - 2 - 3 yrs now. Has just started showing signs of rapid healing with surrounding hard scab. I am getting worried about delay from scsbbing.

It might still be healing under the scab. So is it itching at all? how did you do this?i'm concerned about it taking so long to hear thats my whole concern kinda strange have you been taking the scab off?I would go have it looked at just to make sure something else isn't going on.
If you are that concerned about your own health and safety, you should keep it on your wound. After a few days or so, remove the scab slowly when it starts to peel off naturally. I ,to, have rapid regeneration cells, except mine heal fully after a couple of minutes. I hope this helps you.
