Well, you have run into a hard question: What is a number?
There are several answers, each applicable to certain cases and they are not usually interchangeable. In most cases a number is the length of a line, positive line going one direction and negative lines going the opposite direction. In other cases a number is an object, such as your star, and there may or may not be negative numbers. A space might be considered positive or negative.
You might decide to change your picture and use a line. Or you might decide to use different colored stars for minus temperatures. I don't know any more choices.
