I never heard of a mechanical drain trap. If a drain is unused for a while, it should be sealed, such as by tape over the opening or a balloon in the pipe. Maybe you are thinking of a check valve, which prevents liquid from the sewer from backing up into the house. Water departments sometimes use a check valve in the water line to prevent scoundrels from forcing noxious fluids into the public water supply.
