Should the federal government be able to monitor phone calls and emails?

No, they should not. Monitoring all of peoples lives takes away the entire freedom ideal. Should a terrorist arise, they can use other means rather than monitoring calls and emails to track them down. The government already had access to all direct messages on social media, so we don't need to take it any further.

The only proper function of a government is to prevent anybody else from taking control. The duty of a citizen is to control his government. That is why governments always treat citizens as enemies of the state. You can NOT allow an enemy to monitor your private communications.
