A cycle is a wheel. Encyclo- means encircling. Ped- means a foot. In ancient Greece only slaves went to school, and classes were conducted while walking. The slave teacher was called the pedigogue - the foot leader. Upper classes were taught by tutors, either at home or at the academy.
