I suck at science, so apologies in advance. I know we are all made of atoms, and atoms are made of quarks and something else? But I wondered, if you break each thing down and down, you must eventually reach a base particle? Like the building block for EVERYTHING in the universe? Any ideas? Does it exist or is it theorized?
Again, I suck at science, so I would greatly appreciate any answers to be in 'laymans terms' and metaphors are always good.

*blink* I think some people who don't know what they're talking about have posted here. Molecules are definitely NOT the most basic particle.
Science doesn't know for sure what the most basic particle is, not yet, but string theory says that everything is made up of strings that are vibrating in 10 or 11 dimensions and the type of particle and the amount of energy it has depends on the vibration of the string. There's a lot of related theories there, one of which being M theory where there are actually 'branes' that are membranes that can be points [0 dimensions], strings [1 dimension], sheets [2 dimensions], and objects made of more dimensions that we can't really imagine and don't have the words to describe [what would a 4 dimensional brane be? And how about 5? 6??]. If you look up string theory and M theory there should be a few pretty simple explanations out there.
