The first line of defense in such cases is B vitamins. Doctors won't recommend them because they have no training in that field. They usually don't even know the difference between a nutritionist and a dietitian.
B vitamins are cheap and safe. Look for B-50 or B-100 at the drug store. B2 is a water soluble dye that makes urine bright yellow, so when the color fades, it's time for another pill.
