Why are people still holding the cellphone in front of their faces when taking a selfie?

All the selfies I have seen they held the camera up and to the side so they had to look up and sideways over their shoulder.

A selfie would be kinda pointless if you didn't get your face in it.

Why do people take pictures of themselves at all. I dislike the total attachment to a phone, and find the increase in narcissism rather disturbing.
