I don't think they are. Wear what you feel comfortable in. You don't read a book because of the bookcase that holds it.
In truth I think it's just a matter of fad, (fads rotate) another few years they will probably be considered sexy again. What other options are there?
It's like genitalia hair. Fur, bald or manscaped. There are only so many options.
Nobody ever suggested they are unattractive, they simply fell out of favor, and only for a few people. If you inspect kid's books, any time they show underpants they are tightie whities. In movies, any time they show grownup's underpants they are boxers. That is probably because boxers don't reveal anything. Athletes still wear jock straps.
When a man wears a thong it is called a jock strap. It was first marketed by the Jockey Company about 1920 and has been a badge of office among high school athletes ever since. It is so common that all athletes are called jock strappers, or just jocks. The genuine Jockey article is made with a rubberized fabric that might chafe your leg. If that happens put corn starch on it.
