If we can turn off our emotions, it is an amazing feat. If you had a painful past, and you can stop feeling it, it's great, it's not bad. Because what can you do about the past that is gone? Nothing. You can do something in the present to make good of a future not yet born. The past and the future don't exist, the only thing that exists is the present moment. Therefore, if we can live in the present moment not just turning off emotions, but going beyond that - overcoming ignorance, realizing the truth, then there will be no need to worry about the painful past because it is all like a movie, a drama that is unfolding. When we realize the truth that everything is an illusion, it's like a dream, then we reach that state of eternal happiness and everlasting peace. That is the ultimate goal.
