while we were hugging i just put my hands on her ass and she was cool with it, then i squeezed it a couple of times and she just laughed, i dunno how often i should do that because well... she might get annoyed that i keep doing it or something just someone help me out please? :)

You wouldn't want to be really creepy so only in a playful hug or when you guys are jokeing around since you are just mates. And not extremely often, depending i would say about no more than you are playful so, guestimating about maybe 1 to 3 times a day. But, like i said it depends.
I had a friend like that a few years ago, we were very close but we didn't have a serious relationship, we just enjoyed flirting and messing around. she would let me touch her and she would sometimes touch me.
The key is to pay attention to her body language, if you put your hand on her back and she smiles, gets closer, or gets relaxed etc. then it's a signal she's okay with it. It's a little different for each person, so it's a good thing to know her body language. You can also just ask her, straight forward and be mature about it, ask her if she's okay with you touching her. she was probably caught off guard, nervous (uncomfortable) if she's okay with it, it's cool, if not then you should respect it and not do it again.
