I recently applied for a Discover card with a paper that was sent to me in the mail. I gave them my first name, last name, SSN, and other various pieces of information. That was a few weeks ago, and this is the first time I've ever applied for a card. Today, I received a call asking me to confirm my social security number. The person on the other line had my correct first and last name, and CLAIMED to be with Discover. I was a little reluctant to simply give my SSN over the phone, so I told them I would call them back.

Would giving them my SSN be considered safe? I do recall writing my SSN on the paper that was sent to me in the mail, so I find it kind of odd that the ONE piece of information they need confirmed is my SSN.
