I have this guy friend and he says calling me "pet" is like a joke from Britain? But I'm not quite sure.

Generally used by older people just another way of saying honey or darling but not in a romantic way but it's not a put down. It's used in Ireland as well as Britain.
"It is kind of like saying "love" or "darling", but it is not used to show affection. I guess it is also a way of saying "man" only by the older generation. Younger people wouldn't tend to use this phrase, and it is not derogatory."
