Do animals pee into rivers? It's common sense not to do this because you wouldn't want to contaminate your drinking water, but do animals know this "intuitively" or even at all? What about lakes?

Animal s do not have sanitation rules and do not go to creeks, rivers or lakes to relieve themselves nor do they avoid those areas. If they happen to be near or in they'll do it.
About the only sanitation instincts have to do with covering up their business to help hide the scent to avoid letting predators know they've been there.
Animals who live in and around water will relieve themselves in water. Fish of course also alligators, crocodiles, and hippos, polar bears and very possibly other bears if they are in the water for a long period of time.
