There is nothing subtle about disobeying your parents. They might have experienced hardships in their younger years and they naturally feel insulted if you wear rags.
But then maybe you meant to insult people that way. That is the only reason I know of to cultivate a lousy appearance.
I personally don't see any issue with ripped jeans, but in the adult world you aren't allowed to wear them very often if you work in a professional environment. It's also against a lot of school dress codes. I will warn you though ripped jeans can bring embarrassing problems, like ripping in a really awkward spot. I would listen to your parents because getting punished is never fun!
