Websites play an important role to increase your business. While designing a websites, few points keep in your mind.
Accessibility - your site has to be viewable by people with various disabilities (blind people use screen readers which try to render mark-up as text, but you also have to be aware of people with discromatopsias like protanopia, deuteranopia, tritanopia).
Cross-browser compatibility - it has to be viewable in all browsers your audience may use. Having a site work in IE6 and IE7 is a challenge. Firefox and Chrome tend to be easier because they are much better browsers.
Design - your site should be attractive to your audience.
Technology column - it pays to stay within a single column (i.e. .NET and SQL Server, or PHP and MySQL) rather than mix and match.
Maintenance - how will your site be maintained?
Hosting - I wrote a whole post just about hosting if you scroll back a day or two.
Purpose - what is the primary aim of the site and how will you achieve this?
