Best place to go in England for a couple not into museums or beaches?

Hi there, 

My boyfriend is coming up in July and we are not sure where to go in England for a week break. We previously went to London and enjoyed the more 'kidult' activities. We went to quirky cafes like the cereal cafe, the boardgames one. We went to a nightclub event in a ball pit and made weird pottery in another place. We really loved that stuff.

Basically we like to do things as opposed to spend lots of hours in museums or lying on a beach though we are not necessarily that sporty (think geeky)
Does anyone have any suggestions of specific places to go?
I know I was thinking of Brighton not for the beaches but for the quirkiness though there isn't much to do there.

Go to Cardiff in Wales, a 3 hour drive from London and a major capital. It's the home of Doctor Who, has a huge Techniquest centre, wonderful countryside for walking or just driving around. Lots of castles and other heritage sites, a wonderful port area with great pubs and nightlife. Lots of markets and shopping arcades (covered alleys lined with small "craft" shops). Friendly people and a common second language (Welsh)... give it a go :)
